By safer sex we mean performing sexual activity taking sensible precautions to minimize the risk of infection from HIV and other sexually transmited infections.

In order to do this you need to understand those risks and how they may apply to you. This section aims to provide this type of information, but if you are in any doubt contact our telephone helpline and we can discuss the issue particularly relevant to you.

For Men on Men

Oral Sex

By oral sex we mean any sexual activity involving your mouth. This includes blow jobs (fellatio), rimming (mouth to anal contact), and kissing.

Ways in which you can reduce risk are:

Maintain a good level of hygiene.
Do not swallow.
Pay attention to any cuts, abrasions or infections.

The risks associated with contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections through unprotected oral sex are low than that from anal sex. However, the only safe way is to use a condom.

Using a Condom

When using a condom ensure that you use only water-based lubricants (such as KY jelly) as oil based ones will damage the condom.

When selecting which type of condom it is safer to opt for the ‘Stronger’ types.

Never use a condom which is past its expiry date and don’t carry one around for a long period of time in your pocket or wallet.

When opening a condom avoid tearing it. If in doubt throw it away and use another one.

Anal Sex

By anal sex we mean the insertion of anything into the male anus, whether this is the penis, or some form of sex toy.

Most people think that all gay sex is anal sex. This is not the case. Not all gay men enjoy anal sex. Do not feel that if you are gay you need to have anal sex – you don’t.

Anal sex is the highest risk activity in the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

If you do want to have anal intercourse then make sure you are as safe as you can be by:

Always use a condom with sufficient lubricant both inside your anal area and on your partner’s condomed penis.

If you are new to it, don’t be embarrassed by taking control so that you are comfortable with what is happening. Often being on top to start with is a good idea.
